Hey, Cloud, I wanna talk to you. Tifa, you too.

Aerith, you want to go to the shops with me later?

[Zack is outside House 50 (since he and Aerith finally moved back there) with some building supplies, slowly putting together a little cabin/garage sort of structure beside the house. Yes, folks, it's time. Tammy is being moved into a stable. :c Bother if you want~]

Take it where? You already said I'm Aerith's first and you're not gay, so other men are out. Who's next in line, Nina?

[FALLING SILENT.]

[....Buh?]

What?

...I don't know with her sometimes. She just...says stuff to freak me out.

....Cloud, I was joking.

[SIGH. Don't get off track now, Cloud. Forget Nina.] Yeah, I know. Sorry. Forget it.

You have one complicated brain, Mister Strife.

[Cloud murmurs, and his gaze stops at Zack's chin rather than meeting his eyes. His hand is in Zack's hair again, too.] Lucky me.

[Zack blinks at that for a moment, then his gaze softens, leaning down to rest more comfortably against Cloud, eyes closing. Nice and comfy.]

I think we're all pretty lucky around here.

[Lucky little lab rats. Cloud watches the ceiling, stroking Zack's hair as the other hand fumbles for the covers, pulling a sheet over them both.]

...I'll get us home.

[So comfy he could practically fall asleep like that. Not yet, though. Not quite.]

I'm looking forward to that day.

[Cloud falls silent again, and his hand slides over Zack's hair, back and shoulders. He keeps making that promise.

Maybe it's about time he worked on keeping it.]

[Zack's no mindreader, but he can tell when Cloud is tense, especially with their bodies so close. So he reaches up and starts rubbing the tense muscles of his shoulders, head lifting a bit.] ...What's bugging you?

I haven't...been doing anything. [Cloud's voice comes quietly, dazed. The tone of somebody realizing something as they explain it to someone else.] I walk around the village...I practice. I spend time with you, Aerith, Simon, Tifa... I read the journals, check to see what everyone's doing.

...but nothing else. It's just...dealing with things at they get thrown our way, but not doing anything to move forward. Not doing anything to try and get out of here. Using the excuse that there's nothing we can do and...pretending that everything's all right, between experiments.

We've all fallen into that habit, though. What can we do? There's no one to fight, hardly anyone who really knows what's going on behind the curtains, and the ones who do are cryptic as hell. I'm no scientist or archeologist or anything, so I wouldn't know the first thing about figuring out the tunnels or the temple or whatever. I'm a SOLDIER, Spike, and you're trained for that, too. What are guys like us supposed to do?

[He's not trying to sound defeatist; he's been a little frustrated with this himself. When he hasn't focused on being alive and happy, that is.]

[Cloud absorbs all of this, his fingers moving idly through Zack's hair as he speaks. He has a point; there's no visible enemy, and Cloud didn't know the first thing about investigating or research. This wasn't like things were back on Gaia, when all you needed was a band of roguish environmental terrorists and a little muscle to get some answers. They didn't have an enemy that carelessly dropped hints all over creation so that even the dullest tack could pick up a trail. Things were different here.

But still. Still.]

We're better than this, Zack.

...Then let's figure something out. Get together with some of the others in the village - the guild leaders, Raine, Albert - and talk business, for real. Maybe we can even get some info out of Jacob, or John, if he shows up again. We've gotta start being aggressive about it, or we'll just get pushed around forever.

[That earns a small smile, and Cloud turns his head so that his lips brush against Zack's hair.]

Mm, all right. ...thanks.

You know I'm here for you, man.

[Cloud falls silent again, only now he's thinking about more local problems. Namely, Jenova, Sephiroth, Kadaj and Yazoo and why they've been so silent lately.]

...I should get dressed and head back to Tifa's.

Whatever you wanna do. [Zack's not exactly thrilled, but he knows he can't hog Cloud all the time, so...]

Did she say anything about moving in? [Cloud slides out from beneath Zack, wincing. Ow.]
